Constructed urban environments; coastal wetlands and dry river gorges are inspiration for Martin McEwen’s exploration of landscape and its relationship to the individual.
In his works he represents the way one experiences ‘place’; the way it
feels to be immersed in landscape and move between physical and
imagined places. He expresses his own sensual, emotional and
metaphysical responses to the environments in which he paints,
communicating the experience through the textural quality of his works.
Paint is applied thickly and energetically, worked wet into wet until
the surface is completely covered, then scraped and painted again until
an image ‘in the one skin’ is liberated.
Martin McEwen is a Sydney based artist.
