Nature has always been the inspiration of Karyn Fendley’s artwork. Raised in Brisbane and currently based in Northern NSW, Fendley draws
inspiration from the natural world, whether the minutiae of her
environment, or an aerial view.
Fendley began painting as a child,
inspired by the bushland surrounding her family home. Her work has
explored many avenues since, but continues to show her preoccupation
with nature. Her current works convey a feeling of space that is
evocative of the Australian landscape.
After completing studies in graphic design in 1989, Fendley established
a career as a successful design professional before dedicating herself
to full-time painting. Although she works intuitively, Fendley’s
experience in graphic design has heightened her awareness of space and
negative shapes and of the compositional dynamic they create. Her
attention to the qualities of texture, colour and shape is matched by
an inherent sense of the tension that careful arrangement of these
elements can create.
The rainforests of Far North Queensland inspired her first solo
exhibition in 1993. Since then she has devoted herself to painting,
exhibiting, and travel, exploring the diverse natural landscapes which
inspire her work. Fendley now lives and works in Byron Bay, Australia.
Her work has appeared in group and solo exhibitions in Byron Bay,
Ballina, Coffs Harbour, Brisbane, Melbourne & Italy and is housed
in public and private collections worldwide.
